Most Ronkonkoma homes drain to a cesspool or septic system: Suffolk County says nearly 70% of its homes do, and the county’s Islip sewer map shows no sewer district in Ronkonkoma. Long Island pumping runs about $275 to $515 (Angi, October 2026). If a cesspool fails, Suffolk law requires an upgraded system with a permit, and grants of up to $20,000 (county) and $25,000 (state) can help pay for it.
Ronkonkoma at a glance
- Suffolk County homes on cesspools or septic systems: nearly 70% sourceUnless your street is in a sewer district, assume your home has a cesspool or septic system and keep a pumping record.
- Sewer districts shown in Ronkonkoma on the county's Town of Islip sewer map: none (map dated Sept 2012) sourceHomes across Ronkonkoma rely on on-site systems; pumping and upkeep are the owner's job.
- Lake Ronkonkoma: about 240 acres, groundwater-fed, no surface outlet; recurring algal blooms sourceNitrogen from cesspools and septic systems reaches the lake through groundwater, so a well-kept system near the lake matters more than most.
- Upgrade grants for replacing a cesspool or septic system: up to $20,000 (county SIP) and up to $25,000 or 75% of eligible costs (NYS) sourceIf your cesspool is failing, check grant eligibility before you sign a replacement contract; only approved installers can do grant-funded work.
- Septic pumping price on Long Island: $275 to $515 (national average $432) sourceA quote far outside this range is worth a second opinion; ask what's included.
- Average persons per household: 3.04 (ACS 2020 to 2024) sourceWith three or more people in a home, plan on pumping at the shorter end of the EPA's 3 to 5 year range for septic tanks.

Between pump-outs, some Ronkonkoma owners add a treatment such as Septifix (sponsored link). It is a treatment, not a substitute for pumping, and it won’t revive a failed cesspool: the maker’s claims are its own, and the Nebraska DEQ notes research has shown little benefit from additives. Cesspool and septic companies that serve Ronkonkoma
How we picked
We kept companies that publish a page naming Ronkonkoma in their service area and offer cesspool or septic pumping. They are listed alphabetically. No company paid to be listed, and we have not hired them. Suffolk County requires a county license to pump cesspools; we did not check each company’s license, so ask for the number. Our call line is a separate, labeled option. Checked October 17, 2026.

What drives the price in Ronkonkoma
- Cesspool or tank: a cesspool with several rings holds more than a single tank, and some homes have more than one.
- Buried covers: many Long Island cesspool covers are under soil, and digging adds time.
- How often you pump: a cesspool that needs pumping every few months is usually failing, and pumping won’t fix that.
- After-hours calls: emergency visits usually cost more than a scheduled pump-out.
A company that offers to replace a failed cesspool with a new cesspool, or skip the county permit, is breaking Suffolk rules.
What's different about septic and cesspool pumping in Ronkonkoma
Cesspool or septic tank? What Suffolk allows
Many Ronkonkoma homes, especially older ones, have a cesspool: a ring of precast concrete that lets wastewater seep straight into the ground, with no separate tank. Suffolk County banned cesspools in new construction in 1973, and a law signed in December 2017 closed the gap for old ones: when a cesspool fails, it can’t be replaced with another cesspool, and since July 2019 replacing a system needs a county permit. At a minimum the replacement must include a septic tank.
Pumping an existing cesspool is still allowed and is the normal fix for a full one. The warning sign is frequency: if it needs pumping every few months, the soil around it has clogged, and more pumping only buys time. Anyone pumping cesspools in Suffolk needs a county septic industry license with a pumping endorsement (County Code chapter 563), so ask for the number.
Lake Ronkonkoma and the groundwater under it
Lake Ronkonkoma, about 240 acres, is the largest freshwater lake on Long Island. It is a kettle lake fed mainly by groundwater and rain, with no stream flowing out, so nutrients that reach it tend to stay. LI Parks reported in October 2025 that nitrogen and phosphorus from aging cesspools and septic systems, plus road and lawn runoff, feed the algal blooms that have closed swimming in recent summers.
Long Island’s drinking water also comes from the aquifer beneath it. For homes near the lake, that is two good reasons to keep a system pumped, keep grease and chemicals out of it, and consider an upgrade when it fails.
Why Ronkonkoma isn't on sewers
The county’s Town of Islip sewer map shows no sewer district in Ronkonkoma. The new Ronkonkoma Hub plant, a 500,000-gallon-a-day facility funded through the state, was built for the transit-oriented Hub development north of the train station and nearby airport land, not for the existing neighborhoods. For now, homes around it stay on cesspools and septic systems, and the grant programs below exclude homes in a sewer area or a proposed one.
Grants for a nitrogen-reducing (I/A) system
Suffolk County says an average home system releases about 40 pounds of nitrogen a year. Pumping doesn’t change that; an innovative/alternative (I/A) system does. Two programs help pay for one: the county Septic Improvement Program, up to $20,000 per property, and the New York State Septic System Replacement Program, up to 75% of eligible costs and no more than $25,000.
To qualify, the home must be a one- or two-family house (or a single-family home with one accessory apartment) on a cesspool or septic system, not in a sewer area, with a valid certificate of occupancy and current taxes. Only installers on the county’s approved list can do grant work, and the owner must keep an annual maintenance contract (the county grant covers the first three years). Permit, design and landscaping costs are not covered. Applications with a documented failure get priority.
Permits and rules in Ronkonkoma
Ronkonkoma is a hamlet, not a village, so it has no local sewer or septic office. The area sits in two towns, Islip and Brookhaven, and septic rules come from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Office of Wastewater Management (631-852-5700).
- Pumping: no permit needed, but the company needs a Suffolk County septic industry license with a pumping endorsement.
- Replacing a cesspool or septic system: needs a county permit, and a failed cesspool can’t be replaced with another cesspool. The licensed company files the application through the county’s online portal.
- New construction: cesspools have not been allowed in new homes since 1973.
- Building or wetlands permits: may also be needed from the Town of Islip or Brookhaven, depending on your address and the work.
Call today, schedule soon, or wait?
If an inspection finds a failed cesspool, check grant eligibility before you sign a replacement contract.
How to choose a cesspool and septic company in Ronkonkoma
- Ask for the Suffolk license number. Pumping cesspools in the county requires one.
- Ask for the total. Pumping, hauling and any digging to reach a buried cover, in writing.
- Ask what they found. How full it was, the condition of the rings and the inlet pipe, and whether it is draining.
- For a replacement: ask whether they are on the county’s approved I/A installer list and whether they handle the permit.
Red flags: an offer to install a new cesspool, to skip the permit, or a price for a full replacement before anyone has inspected the system.
When to book in Ronkonkoma
Book routine pumping in Ronkonkoma between spring and late fall, when the ground isn’t frozen and covers are easier to dig out. If you are selling, have the system pumped and inspected before listing so a problem doesn’t surface during the buyer’s inspection.

Not sure how your system is doing? Take the 30-second Septifix septic quiz (sponsored link). Septifix is a treatment; it doesn’t replace pumping, and a failing cesspool still has to be replaced under Suffolk County rules.

Questions people in Ronkonkoma ask
How much does cesspool pumping cost in Ronkonkoma?
Angi's October 2026 range for Long Island is $275 to $515. Larger cesspools, more than one ring, buried covers and after-hours calls cost more. Get two or three written quotes that include hauling and digging.
How often should I pump a cesspool or septic tank in Ronkonkoma?
The EPA says most septic tanks need pumping every 3 to 5 years. Ronkonkoma homes average just over three people, so the shorter end fits many households. A cesspool that fills again within months is usually failing, not just full.
Can I replace my cesspool with a new cesspool in Suffolk County?
No. Under a law signed in December 2017, a failed cesspool must be replaced with an upgraded system, at least a septic tank, and replacements have needed a county permit since July 2019.
Is Ronkonkoma on sewers?
Not the existing neighborhoods. The county's Town of Islip sewer map shows no sewer district in Ronkonkoma, and the Ronkonkoma Hub treatment plant was built for the Hub development north of the train station.
Are there grants to replace a cesspool in Ronkonkoma?
Yes. Suffolk County's Septic Improvement Program offers up to $20,000, and New York State's program covers up to 75% of eligible costs, capped at $25,000, for nitrogen-reducing I/A systems installed by approved installers. Homes in sewer areas don't qualify.
